Meat Loaf Soul (1967-1968)
Founded in California in Summer 1967 shortly after Meat Loaf's arrival and meeting 14-year-old Rick Bozzo. They rehearsed at the studio of Electric Prunes guitarist Jimmy Spaggnola, and had in their set, two Meat Loaf originals, 'Deep River Blues', and '(I'm An) Animal', the latter was performed by Meat on the first leg of the Hang Cool Tour in 2010. Their only recording session was in early 1968 at Gold Star Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, at which Jimmy Spaggnola's brother Gary played guitar. During the session while Rick Bozzo went out for a cigarette break, he spotted Pete Woodman on the street carrying drumsticks, and solicited him to join the session. Woodman however agreed only to play on the recording if his wife Susie could play keyboards and provide vocals. At the session the two aforementioned Meat Loaf originals were recorded, as well as a song written for The Electric Prunes called 'Way Of My Own'.
By now, Meat Loaf Soul had truly been founded, although the band now was in search of a guitarist and went through several before discovering Frankie Montoya, who joined the band for their debut gig at The Cave in Huntington Beach, where the band was opening for Van Morrison. Soon after this, the band relocated to Michigan at the suggestion of Pete Woodman, and Frank Montoya left the band, and was replaced by "Wild Bill", at which time the band changed names to 'Popcorn Blizzard, and later 'Floating Circus', after giving up on guitarists. The band was disbanded around late January 1970 after Meat Loaf and his girlfriend Jill Le Fore had moved to Los Angeles. After gaining a job parking cars at the Aquarius Theatre, Meat Loaf was cast in the West Coast production of 'Hair', and as the say, the rest is history...
